What is a server for virtualization?
A server for virtualization is able to technically simulate and provide virtual computer systems with the help of software (the hypervisor). This allows companies to run many different systems and programs on a single physical server.
A single server can run multiple VMs (virtual machines) in isolation of each other. These can be individual applications or completely different operating systems. This allows virtualization servers to operate at a significantly higher level of efficiency than conventional servers by having the hypervisor assign them the resources they need for their work processes.

Here we show you an example of what equipment a full virtualization server must have so that it can cope with the high number of computing processes that are typically required:
- Sufficient CPU cores and processor virtualization functions These functions include, for example, dedicated technologies for setting up special VMs, for instance under specific processor infrastructures (IA-32, Intel 64) or for I/O optimization for reduced CPU load/latency.
- Suitable network interfaces Typically 1-100GbE with support for hardware virtualization features such as V-Queues, SR-IOV, or vLANs.
- Plenty of RAM You need a lot of memory as well as secure data integrity and error-free working processes. This is usually achieved by using ECC memory.
- High-performance storage for storing VM files Shared storage in the form of SAN or NAS servers is the typical storage solution for clustered virtualization servers, whereas HCI deployments have sufficient local storage per node. Stand-alone virtualization servers require high-performance storage, typically with RAID 10, SSD caching, or storage tiering.
- Building blocks offer This often includes LTS (Long time service) offers for Servers for virtualization as well as certified hardware for specific applications like VMWare, Citrix, Hyper-V, etc. These prefabricated offers have the advantage that they are usually easy to scale and can also be readily provided for entire data centers.
