What is Scientific Computer?

A Scientific Computer is an IT system equipped with scientific programs. Scientific Server or Scientific Workstation is used to distinguish servers/workstations used for scientific purposes from computers intended for general purposes. Scientific servers and workstations are usually based on a Linux system running Scientific Linux.

Where are Scientific Servers and Workstations used?

Scientific servers and workstations are mainly used in science and research. Examples of this are in the following application areas:

What distinguishes a Scientific Server / Workstation?

Scientific servers and workstations must meet various requirements for use in scientific fields:

  • High performanceScientific servers are often used in high-performance computing and must meet this demand. This is usually ensured by a multiprocessor system with co-processors and GPUs. Scientific workstations also have high-performance requirements, which is why they are often equipped with a Dual Xeon or Dual AMD Epyc system.
  • Low volumeUsually, Scientific Workstations as tower systems are located directly in the working environment. Therefore the volume level needs to be minimal.
