SAN Storage explained
A Storage Area Network is a specific storage network architecture in which the storage capacity of hard disks on individual servers is bundled into a block.
This virtual block of SAN storage is then able to be partitioned and dynamically assigned to the different servers as needed. The shared storage is managed centrally and meets current requirements for highly available, fail-safe business storage solutions.
Benefits of using SAN Storage
In contrast to a DAS (Direct Attached Storage) or a NAS (Network Attached Storage), SAN storage server is specifically designed to provide many different clients with the right computing power, even using fibre-optic technology.
However, this flexible use of the given storage capacity is not the only strength of a SAN storage architecture:
- SAN storage with Fibre Channel connectivity for ultra-high data rates and low latencyThe most common SAN Network protocol uses the strengths of fibre optic technology. The Fibre Channel transport protocols have factory embedded SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) commands ensuring delay-free data transfer. The neccessity for low latency lends itself to all flash systems often being employed due to their strong performance.
- Dedicated storage performance with separate networksThe storage capacities of the servers are fully structured via the SAN meaning the servers can access on demand. The SAN storage's special architecture allows servers to be assigned logical unit numbers (LUNs) from a data block on request; these storage blocks are provided from the shared storage.
The servers do not need to manage the storage units, while the SAN coordinates the hard drives and ensures optimum allocation to the servers. Data transfers in the LAN remain completely unaffected.
- Uniform processing and high availability through SAN storage as a central data poolBy bundling the storage capacities of multiple servers in SAN storage, companies can tailor a wide variety of data backup and data security applications to meet specific requirements. A well-designed SAN storage also provides a high disaster tolerance. The SAN is designed in such a way that, thanks to its architecture, redundant structures can be set up and high availability requirements can be met.
- Configuring SAN Storage Systems freelyBy reducing the server role to management, the separate storage can be expanded virtually as needed. Various options are available for this, including JBOD, JBOF, or the use of dedicated storage servers.
Typical applications for SAN storage
High-performance shared storage solutions such as SAN storage are mostly in demand when it comes to managing large databases such as Oracle or Microsoft SQL databases.
In addition, large virtual environments also benefit from the strengths of the Storage Area Network, where the aim is to ensure the reliable operation of virtual machines (VMs) or the availability of virtual desktop infrastructures (VDIs).
