Those utilizing iSCSI storage networks benefit from the connection commonly found in existing IT infrastructure. As a result, a powerful iSCSI SAN environment can be set up for a wide variety of industries at manageable costs.
HAPPYWARE can offer you everything you need to be able to set up an iSCSI storage network. We will be happy to assist you with our robust hardware and personal advice
What does iSCSI mean?
The abbreviation iSCSI stands for Internet Small Computer System Interface. This technology is used to transfer data over existing IP networks.
When exchanging data, one initiator and one target interact with each other, and the SCSI commands are transferred via TCP/IP. This allows the implementation of an iSCSI SAN over long distances as well as based on existing Ethernet networks.
Benefits of an iSCSI Storage Solution
- High compatibility with existing infrastructuresIn many places, iSCSI networks build on existing infrastructure or can easily be adapted to it. No new network structures, HBAs, or processes have to be established thanks to the data transfer via existing Ethernet structures, which makes the setup, administration, and maintenance of an iSCSI SAN attractive for SMBs, both technically and in terms of costs.
- Data exchange via LAN and WANThe technology allows SCSI commands to be sent over short (LAN, local area network) as well as very long distances (WAN, wide area network) from the initiator to the target via standard routers.
In a company, computers of different locations can send requests to the iSCSI SAN and communicate with the storage while the distance to the network is not an obstacle. - Flexible usability of the iSCSI protocolDue to the IP-based transmission of block data, the communication between initiator and target usually takes place without technical difficulties. As a result of this universality, iSCSI can be used in different configurations, e.g. in development, production, backup processes, or in virtual environments.
- Secure data connection based on established standardsBoth simple iSCSI sessions and iSCSI multipathing ensure the security of the connection. This can be an unidirectional or a reciprocal verification of legitimacy. A common possibility within iSCSI storage networks is the CHAP (Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol).
iSCSI in brief - How does an iSCSI SAN work?
iSCSI is a protocol for the exchange between client and server: The client (or iSCSI initiator) tries to interact with the data stored on a server or iSCSI target. This can be an iSCSI Storage Server in a SAN.
The initiator (available as software or hardware solution) sends specific SCSI commands to the target via iSCSI protocol. This system, in this case the iSCSI Storage Server within the SAN, reads the commands, processes the request and sends the data back to the initiator in the same way.
