What is Object Storage?
Object Storage is also called Object-based Storage. Data is stored in a large data pool, categorised by an individual set of metadata and a unique identifier.
This storage option works without hierarchical levels, but creates a specific object based on the extended metadata of a file and its identifier. These unique objects can be retrieved with precision, but they cannot be stacked.
Object Storage offers these advantages
By generating a unique object from the file and its metadata, Object Storage is revealing itself as a flexible storage solution. Today, object-based storage is already widely used for cloud computing applications and cloud services.
These are the strengths of object storage:
- Object-based storage can be scaled indefinitelyBecause object storage works entirely without hierarchy levels and all data simply flows together in a storage pool, this pool can be easily expanded. Thanks to the specific metadata and the identifier, each file is truly unique; even if there are several petabytes of data on your servers, there will be no conflicts.
- Optimised data analysisThe metadata of the files play a central role in object storage and are integrated in every object. This makes it ideal for the analysis and evaluation of even very large data sets. The metadata can also be used to easily reconstruct data, making Object Storage a proven backup solution.
- Simple data structuring and intuitive accessStoring data as objects follows the categorisation of the metadata, but is not location-specific and unique for each object. Users can therefore access the object via an interface without having to know the exact location of the file.
- Cost-effective storage solutionThis storage technology can be used in a variety of contexts for the efficient and cost-effective storage of data. As data volumes grow, companies and applications will realise the benefits of using object storage on their servers. This applies both to a large pool of customer data and to cloud services.
